Under the direction of Dr. Johan de Lange, he furthered his training in cornea and refractive surgery after earning his ophthalmology degree at the University of the Free State. Dr. Coetzee has made a professional commitment to continuously advance his knowledge in these surgical disciplines and to acquire and disseminate new information in the constantly changing field of ophthalmology. As a result, he has participated in a number of international courses, including those at the London Vision Clinic, the Singapore National Eye Institute, the European Vitreo-Retinal Training School in Bremen, the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery, and the Wellington Eye Clinic in Ireland. Prof. Dan Reinstein and Dr. Arthur Cummings, two highly respected and well-known professionals, trained him. The Refractive Surgery Alliance (RSA), a network of refractive surgeons from more than 30 countries, includes Dr. Coetzee as a member. He also oversees the Envision Centre for Sight, one of just two sub-specialist training facilities outside of the United States for refractive surgery, where he educates the next generation of refractive surgeons. He also serves as a preceptor for the RSA Fellowship Network. The World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences counts him among its stakeholders. The Journal of Global Refractive Surgery, a new academic online journal, has Dr. Coetzee as a co-editor. He is motivated to conduct research in refractive and corneal transplant surgery and to speak at congresses about his findings and experiences because he is passionate about the advancement of the field.
