About City
Knysna is town with around 50000 residents in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It is a part of the Garden Route. It is located in a way that is easier to reach from different sides. It is 34 degrees south of the equator, 72 km east of the town of George on the N2 highway and 25 km west of Plettenberg Bay. The name of the town 'Knysna' is derived from a Khoikhoi word that means "ferns".
The town has grown as a great tourist destination. The golf enthusiasts also flock to Knysna because of a number of world class golf courses such as Pezula Golf Course, Simola Golf Course and Knysna Golf Course. There are airports near Plettenberg, Bay and George to make it easier for tourists to travel to Knysna. There's Mitchell's brewery at Knysna as well. A lot of hiking trails and a number of outdoor activities around the forest, rivers, estuary and ocean surrounding the town draw the tourists round the year. A lot of hikers, runners, kayakers, swimmers and fishermen explore the beauty of Knysna.
Knysna has also emerged a tourist hotspot because there are a lot of events happening at Knysna round the year. Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival is organized in late June or early July every year. It lasts for 10 days. The inaugural edition was held in 1983. People get together for this festival consume 200.000 oysters in 10 days. Rugby, golf, bowls, squash, cycling and marathons make the festival more fun-filled. The Knysna Forest Marathon and Half Marathon and Rotary Cycle Tour also draw the sporting enthusiasts.
Knynsna Speed Festival better known as The Jaguar Simola Hillclimb is the most popular hillclimb event in South Africa. It is held in eary May every year. It is spread over 3 days. There is an event called Classic Car Friday for cars built before 1980. However, there are only 60 entries permitted. On the other hand, The King of the Hill Challenge is held over the weekend. On Saturday, cars practice and participate in pre-qualifying. Sunday is the big day when cars take the final run.
The most important landmarks to keep in mind are Brenton-on-Sea, Garden Route, National Park, Featherbed Private Nature Reserve and Kynsna-Amatole Montane Forests etc. The Baffalo Bay Park Caravan Park and Kynsna Elephant Park are interesting place to visit. Kynsna Elephant Park is a great opportunity to get to see 7 elephants roaming in 75 hectare stretch of land. Featherbed Private Nature Reserve offers a spectacular view of Kynsna and the lagoon. The trip to Kynsna is not complete without a trip to the lagoon.
If you are interested in shopping, you can explore Woodmill Lane Shopping Centre, Metelerkamps, The Waterfront - Knysna Quay, Knysna Mall etc. The Drydock Food Co, JJs Restaurant, Muse Fusion Food etc. serve delicious food for tourists of diverse taste.
In terms of educational facilities, Knysna Primary School, Knysna Montessori School, Oakhill School, Knysna High School, Percy Mdala High School etc. cater to the different age groups of children.
