About City
Secunda is a town situated and constructed in the middle of the coalfields of the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. In Latin, Secunda stands for second/following. It was named based on the fact that it was the second Sasol extraction refinery producing oil from coal, after Sasolburg.

In 1974, Sasol Townships Limited which was a subsidiary company of Sasol Limited was asked to set up and develop Secunda. Once it was clear where the site for the Sasol complex was to be, the next thing to be decided was whether to merge the existing towns of Evander and Tirchardt. Evander went on to remain a separate town but Trichardt and Secunda were merged.
Secunda is unique for its architecture. There are massive cooling towers, high chimneys and steel structures which one can relate to the South African oil-from-coal industry.
After the 1973 oil crisis, Secunda came into existence to make South Africa less dependent on crude oil import. The largest coal liquefaction plant in the world produces synthetic fuel, diesel, petrochemicals etc. Sasol Synfuels are big industrial refineries. Brandspruit, Middelbult, Bosjesspruit and Twistdraai are the four coal mines in the area. They are the part of the largest underground coal mining complex in South Africa.
Secunda Sports Stadium came up in 1986. There is an ultra modern library that came up in 1987. It is called Jan Coertzen Public Library. A community centre also came up in 1994. It was named after Rev. Casper Breedt.
A shopping mall came up in late 2013. It has larger Checkers and Game, a 3D cinema and many shops akin to what one would find in a Gauteng Mall. There is a fitness centre in place. It is owned by Sasol and situated in the business district. There is a casino called Graceland as well.
Secunda Mall, Secunda Shopping Centre, Saber's Curtain & Dress Fabrics CC are a few of the well known shopping centres. EISH, Crawdaddy's (Good Food & Pub Co.) Secunda, Bosveld Lapa Restaurant are popular restaurants and food joints in the area.
