About City
Kempton Park is situated on the western city limits of Ekurhuleni and shares its administrative boundaries with Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city. Kempton Park has been a part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since 2000. It is located south of Tembisa. Tembisa is one of the biggest townships in South Africa. Kempton Park is situated on the western city limits of Ekurhuleni and shares its administrative boundaries with Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city. Kempton Park has been a part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since 2000. It is located south of Tembisa. Tembisa is one of the biggest townships in South Africa. This township too is merged into Ekurhuleni. It's spelt in Afrikaans sometimes as "Kemptonpark".In terms of its history, Kempton Park is situated on two Boer farms in the South African Republic (ZAR). Zuurfontein No 369 was the first farm. Rietfontein was the second one. After gold was discovered in Johannesburg, merely 22 km southeast of the farms in 1886, the railway line that connected Pretoria to Vereeniging and to the Cape line was established in the early 1890s. However, the railway line did not go through Johannesburg but ran east through the two farms with a station called Zuurfontein.
When Karl Friedrich Wolff separated a portion of his Zuurfontein farm into 216 residential parts, Kempton Park was formally established in 1903. The new town was named Kempten after the German town in Bavaria of his birth. Later, it was converted to the English version as Kempton Park.
Kempton Park is home to O. R. Tambo International Airport. In 1952, the airport namely Jan Smuts International Airport was established on land next to the community and made available for use in 1953. The name of the airport was altered later to Johannesburg International Airport in the late 1990s and then to its current name O. R. Tambo International Airport in 2006.
Kempton Park was declared an independent city in 1992 having suburbs such as Cresslawn, Birchleigh, Kempton Park West, Edleen, Van Riebeeck Park, Glen Marais, and Norkem Park etc.
Kempton Park has its fair share of economic activities. As a vast industrial zone, Spartan has many chemical manufacturing and other industrial sites. Moderfontein is the suburb having one of the major companies such as the AECI Dynamite Factory. Kempton Park is also known for the large coal power station called Kelvin power station which provided power to the City of Johannesburg. Kempton Park also has the Emperor's Palace Casino.
An airport plays an important role in a city's economy. Kempton Park is home to quite a few airline and other aviation companies. There is South African Airways, a major carrier of South Africa based in Kempton Park. South African Express Airways is located in Kempton Park in terms of its head office. Airlink which is a regional South African airline is also based on the grounds of O. R. Tambo Airport. The same is the case with a low cost airline called Mango. Comair and Kulula.com are right close to Ekurhuleni nearby O. R. Tambo airport. Federal Air also uses O. R. Tambo grounds. The Isando Industrial Park has the head office of Time whereas Kempton Park has the office of Safair.
The international airport plays a dominant role in the local economy. Several airline and other aviation related companies are headquartered in Kempton Park. South African Airways, the flag carrier of South Africa, and subsidiary South African Express Airways have their head offices in Kempton Park. Airlink, a regional South African airline, has its headquarters on the grounds of OR Tambo Airport. Mango, a low cost airline, is headquartered on the grounds of OR Tambo. The headquarters of Comair and Kulula.com are at an intersection within Ekurhuleni in close proximity to OR Tambo. Federal Air also has its headquarters on the OR Tambo grounds. 1Time has its head office in the Isando Industrial Park. Safair's head office is in Kempton Park.
In terms of educational facilities, Kempton Park has seven leading high schools namely Hoërskool Jeugland, Hoërskool Kempton Park, Rhodesfield High School, Hoërskool Birchleigh, Norkem Park High, Sir Pierre van Ryneveld, Shangri-La Academy , Sonrise Christian School, and Maranatha Christian School.
