About City
With a population of less than 26000, Port Alfred is a tiny town situated in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is located on the eastern seaboard of the country near the Kowie River. It is right between Port Elizabeth and East London. It is 30 km west of Cannon Rocks.

In the early 1820s, Port Alfred came into existence. It was British Settlers who came to the area led by Lord Charles Somerset. He used it as a makeshift place of stay between the Cape Colony and the Xhosa community. There were, in earliest times, two towns. Settlers who came on the west bank in 1820 called it Port Kowie and the ones who came on the east bank called it Port Frances. In 1860, when Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's son, paid a visit to the place, it was renamed in his honour.
In 1839, William Cock and George Hodgkinson began the work to stop the natural route of the river and turn it toward the sea. The first man-made harbour in South Africa came into being in 1841.
Right at the junction of the R67 and R72 road, Port Alfred is situated. The R67 links Port Alfred with the N2 at Grahamstown to the north. The R72 connects the N2 close to Colchester to the west. It further follows the coast to East London on the eastern side.
