About City
Located around 110 km northeast of Port Elizabeth and 130 km southwest of East London, Grahamstown is a town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. As far as Makana Local Municipality is concerned, Grahamstown is the biggest town in the area. It is also the seat of municipal council. It has Rhodes University located here. It has also got the Estern Cape Division of the High Court.

It dates back to the 19th century. Grahamstown came into being in 1812. It was Lieutenant-Colonel John Graham established it as a military outpost. It was done as a measure to secure the eastern frontier of British influence the Cape Colony against the Xhosa. In 1833, there were two or three English merchants who had some money. At that time, the population was limited to 6000 people. In a few decades, it rapidly developed. It served as a financial and cultural hub of Albany. In 1872, the work on the railway line linking Grahamstown to Port Alfred on the coast started. Grahamstown was also the place where the first diamond find was tested by Henry Carter Galpin.
In the 20th century, the first event that made an impact on Grahamstown was the establishment of Rhodes University College in 1904. By 1951, it turned into a full-fledged university. At present, it is a renowned institution providing education to more than 6000 undergraduate and post-graduate students.
Currently, Grahamstown has many landmarks worth visiting. South African National Library for the Blind, the National English Literary Museum, the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, the International Library of African Music, the Albany Museum are reputed institutes and places of historical significance.
Born in England in 1820, Galphin was an architect, surveyor, civil engineer, chronometer, clock and watchmaker. He was also interested in optics and astronomy. His observatory has been turned into The Observatory Museum.
Grahamstown carries a festival spirit. National Arts Festival is held every June or July. It lasts for 10 days and includes a portion of Jazz as well. In a town that has a population of around 40000, the crowd that comes in during the festival brings an additional population of more than 50000 people. The festival has been held since 1974. It is the largest arts festival in South Africa. SciFest Africa is attended by around 50000 people.
