Alec Sharwood, the company's founder, was born in Kimberly in 1899, at the height of the Boer War. After serving as a pilot in World War One, he trained at de Beers when he returned to Kimberly. In 1923, he relocated to Grahamstown and opened a dealership for Dort automobiles. He relocated to Port Elizabeth the following year and opened a gas station selling Atlantic fuel. Since this business venture was successful, there are now five gas stations. When tyre retreading was a successful and profitable industry, a factory was established in 1930 and operated for many years. All of the major motorcycle dealerships in Port Elizabeth joined the Honda motorcycle franchise after it was added in 1968. Over 25 years ago, the Supa Quick network was introduced, and Supa Quick fitment centres were added to each of the filling stations. This proved to be the best course of action, and it was decided to focus on fitment centers. The family business was now being run by Richard Sharwood, and under his direction it expanded quickly.
