Each day, our hospitals employ almost 2600 people. Members of a discussion group, including Dr. G.M. Pitje, a lawyer, Mr. R. Maponya, a businessman, and 36 doctors, one of whom was Dr. N. Motlana, decided to create their own company in an effort to level the playing field by establishing a medical scheme and a private clinic to serve the underserved black community. After establishing Kwacha, the initial company, Sizwe Medical Fund was founded. The aim of developing a complementary private clinic at the same time Sizwe was being established was eventually realised in 1985. Blacks were segregated from whites at a cost that was beyond their means due to discrimination, and they were placed in private wards to maintain this separation.
