Koedoeslaagte's history was first documented during the Great Trek. On December 16, 1838, the Koekemoers and Van Vuurens took part in the Battle of Blood River. After that, the Voortrekkers relocated from the Republic of Natalia (today's Kwazulu-Natal) to the Eastern Free State and Transvaal. Here on Koedoeslaagte near the Vaal River is where great-grandfather Van Vuuren made his home. The then-Commission of Monuments honoured him by placing this commemorative stone on his grave in rec

The daughter of Gottlieb Rudolph Koekemoer, who was married to one of Great-grandfather Van Vuuren's daughters, received this portion of the farm, where the Koekemoers currently reside. At Die Ou-plaas, the original farmhouse's ruins are still visible. Johannes Gerhardus Koekemoer (Hannes) was born here on the farm during World War II. We are left with a bushveld wilderness that is waiting to be explored since there hasn't been any commercial farming in this area since 1971. Life on the farm is derived from the Vaal River, and Koedoeslaagte has a 1-kilometer riverfront with a network of rapids, pools, and islands. The farm also features its own mountains and interestingly it was here on this mountain where geologists in the 70's studied the possibility of a meteorite being responsible for the mountainous landscape in the midst of the pan-flat Northern Free State and Northwest. The Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site now proudly includes Koedoeslaagte.
