I was absent when we were able to perform the thrilling surgery at Emmaus Hospital. Then, my husband and I completed a three-year MFAM MED programme at the University of Orange Free State to become more qualified general practitioners. I was hired in 1996 to work at Bloemfontein Hospital as a medical officer in ophthalmology. In 2000, I became certified as an ophthalmologist.
